Levonorgestrel Overview

Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl estradiol Pill is a prescription birth control pill/tablet that is taken to avoid pregnancy. It is used for Preventing pregnancy after having unprotected sexual intercourse or when there is a suspected failure of birth control. Levonorgestrel is a progestin and is a combined product which contains 2 hormones including Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol. This belongs to a group of drugs often referred to as Hormonal Contraceptives. This group of drugs are specifically made to prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation and with this, alters cervical mucus and aligns the uterus.

Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol often comes in a pill and tablets form and is taken with or without food once everyday.

Levonorgestrel Side Effects of the medication includes Menstrual Bleeding, Breast tenderness and vomiting.

DO NOT use Levonorgestrel when:

  • you have vaginal bleeding
  • you suspect or are pregnant
  • you have had a history of stroke or bleeding of the brain or breast cancer
  • you have an allergy to any ingredients of Levonorgestrel
